The Hon Dean Harriss MLC is the Member for Huon in the Tasmanian Legislative Council.  He is an independent member and is not aligned to a political party.

Born and raised in the Huon Valley, Dean has seven generations born and raised here behind him.  His father Paul represented the Huon Electorate in the Legislative Council from 1996-2014, and the Electorate of Franklin in the House of Assembly from 2014-2016. Dean was elected to the Legislative Council and assumed office on 18 May 2022.  As Dean says, “I remember going to the Legislative Council with my father and having good conversations with him and I guess my passion comes from seeing proper debates and votes that were not along party lines.”

Dean has a keen interest in the development of community and is very active and engaged in many fronts including [DEAN TO LIST MEMBERSHIPS ETC].  He is the Patron of the Huon Valley PCYC.

Dean is passionate about the area he represents, especially:

  • Roads – Huon Highway upgrades, Channel Highway from Kingston to Cygnet, urgent action to address Southern Outlet traffic organisation
  • Housing – People in our region are struggling to pay rent, facing homelessness and young people are battling to break into the housing market. The Huon electorate is well placed to help get more people into housing but critical attention is needed to removing red tape so that developments can proceed with minimum delay
  • Education – expand trade training opportunities
  • Tourism – facilities at Bruny Island, promote Cockle Creek as the iconic “End of the Rod” journey to the southern tip of Australia

“Dean is considered and balanced, and has a long history of contributing to his electorate … he is … truly independent”.

Andrew Smith, Willie Smith’s Appleshed
“Dean quietly contributes to his community and over many years has been a role model to young people through his junior football and cricket coaching.  Additionally, his leadership in senior sport are highly regarded and he has represented Tasmania at the national indigenous cricket championships for over a decade, including as captain”.
Paul Burnell Managing Director, Ronald Young Builders
