About Dean
I’m Dean Harriss, a proud lifelong resident of the Huon Valley, with deep generational family ties to the region. With a heritage grounded in hard work, resilience, and community spirit, I bring a strong local voice to the Tasmanian Parliament as your Member for Huon.
Growing up I attended Glen Huon Primary and Huonville High school. At the conclusion of grade 10 I started a Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship, gaining valuable experience both in construction and life, over 25 years I built a successful career in the building and construction industry. My hands-on experience has given me a practical understanding of the challenges faced by locals, small businesses, and families working hard to build a future in our region.
As a husband and father raising four children in the Huon, I understand firsthand the pressures families face — from juggling work and school commitments to accessing quality services and opportunities. This lived experience drives my commitment to improving education outcomes and ensuring every child has the support they need to thrive.
I’m a passionate advocate for grassroots sport, with long-standing involvement in local clubs and sporting organisations across the Huon. I recognise the vital role sport plays in connecting communities, building resilience, and creating opportunities for young people.
Whether it’s advocating for better infrastructure, supporting community organisations, or championing education reform, I am dedicated to delivering real outcomes for the people of Huon.
I am passionate about the area I represent, especially:
- Housing – People in our region are struggling to pay rent, facing homelessness and young people are battling to break into the housing market. The Huon electorate is well placed to help get more people into housing but critical attention is needed to removing red tape so that developments can proceed with minimum delay
- Education – expand trade training opportunities (more to add)
- Roads – Huon Highway upgrades, Channel Highway from Kingston to Cygnet, urgent action to address Southern Outlet traffic congestion
- Tourism – facilities at Bruny Island, promote Cockle Creek as the iconic “End of the Road” journey to the southern tip of Australia
